It’s May…Which Means Commencement Speech Time
It’s spring again and so time for college and high school commencement speeches. I must admit I’m a sucker for a good commencement speech. Usually they are filled with great stories, funny anecdotes, and words of wisdom to live by (that is if they are done correctly). Over the next few weeks for Crelate’s Monday Morning Inspiration I will be sharing a few of the best addresses from this graduation season.
For our first speech we arrive at comedian Will Ferrell, giving the commencement address at the University of Southern California. Ferrell is a 1990 graduate of USC–his degree is in Sports Information (which has sense been cut as a major at USC). This speech hits all the notes of a great commencement, enjoy for your Monday Morning Inspiration.
One key takeaway is to enjoy the journey and avoid getting too caught up in results. This is a fantastic reminder. Ferrell notes, “Enjoy the process of your search without succumbing to the pressure of the result.”
Key Quotes from from Ferrell’s Commencement Speech…
“Throwing darts at the dart board to see what would stick…” “You are never not afraid, I’m still afraid”
“My fear of failure never approached in magnitude my fear of what if…I never tried at all”
“I didn’t read reviews because I was too busy throwing darts at the dart board all the while facing my fears…”
“You will never truly be successful until you learn to give beyond yourself…empathy and kindness are the true signs of emotional intelligence”
“Enjoy the process of your search without succumbing to the pressure of the result…”
